Arusha

All-in budget estimate
Cost breakdown
  • Guesthouse (dorm)$6–9/night
  • Dalla-dalla to townTZS 500 (~$0.20)
  • Nyama choma plate$2.50
  • Safari day trip (shared)$45–60
  • SIM + 10GB data$8
Field note

The Central Market on Sokoine Road has the cheapest fresh fruit in the region — skip the guesthouse breakfast and build your own for under 80 cents. The 316 bus to Moshi leaves at 6:30 AM from the Clock Tower roundabout, not the tourist bus stand.

Narrow Stone Town alley in Zanzibar with carved wooden doors and warm lantern light at dusk
02 — Stone Town & Spice Routes

Zanzibar

Per day
$22–31
All-in budget estimate
Cost breakdown
  • Budget guesthouse (private)$12–18/night
  • Dala dala to NungwiTZS 2,500 (~$1)
  • Forodhani night market$3–5 full meal
  • Spice tour (local guide)$12 pp
  • Ferry from Dar$35 economy
Field note

Book the 7 AM fast ferry, not the 8 AM — it's the same price but the 8 AM is always overbooked. Forodhani Gardens night market is genuinely the best $4 dinner in East Africa. Avoid the "spice tour" touts outside the port — walk three blocks to Emerson Spice and book directly for the same price.

Wooden fishing boats on the glassy surface of Lake Victoria at sunrise with fishermen hauling nets
03 — Mwanza & the Western Shore

Lake Victoria

Per day
$14–19
All-in budget estimate
Cost breakdown
  • Guesthouse (private room)$8–12/night
  • Tilapia plate (lakeside)$1.80
  • Bus Arusha → Mwanza$12–15 (8 hrs)
  • Boat to Saa Nane Island$3 return
  • Chapati + beans breakfast$0.60
Field note

Mwanza is the most underrated city in Tanzania. The Rock Restaurant is Instagram-famous but the $2 tilapia at Isamilo fish market is why you actually came. Night buses from Dar arrive at 5 AM — Kahama Guesthouse near the bus stand is $9 and has hot water. Worth every cent.

Rolling green tea plantation hills in Tanzanias Southern Highlands with mist clinging to ridgelines at dawn
04 — Mbeya, Iringa & the Tea Country

Southern Highlands

Per day
$12–17
All-in budget estimate
Cost breakdown
  • Guesthouse Mbeya$7–11/night
  • TAZARA train Dar → Mbeya$18 2nd class
  • Local bus Iringa → Mbeya$4 (3 hrs)
  • Isimila Stone Age site entry$5
  • Market lunch (rice + beans)$0.80
Field note

The TAZARA railway is the most beautiful 36-hour journey in East Africa and almost no guidebook covers it properly. Buy 2nd class tickets at the Dar station three days ahead — they sell out. The highlands are cool enough for a fleece at night even in July.
